RATES & REFERENCES

Indexing and Editing Rates
Indexing rates vary according to the complexity of the material and are based on a sample of the work to be indexed. I tend to be thorough in my indexing. For scholarly work, rates range from $2.50 to $5.00 per indexable page. Less complex texts range from $2.00 to $3.50. Indexable pages are typically those of the book’s introduction, main body, captioned illustrations or tables, and footnotes/endnotes that are extensions of the main text. They usually do not include tables of contents, photo credits, bibliographical materials, or pages with no indexable text.

Unusual publishing requirements may result in higher rates. These include, but are not limited to, excessively tight deadlines, changes in pagination during the indexing process or after the index has been submitted, and the submission of drafts whose final pagination has not been determined.

Editing rates range from $20.00 to $32.50 per 1000 words of editable text and, like indexing rates, vary according to the complexity of the material edited.
